Special to Tejano Tribune

I met Hector Serrano in 1974 when he and I were appointed, along with other El Pasoans, to a local committee to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
At the Civic Center Theater we performed a costumed re-enactment of the event. Hector and I were both faculty members of the recently organized El Paso Community College. We were part of the group who worked to get a performance amphitheater built in McKelligon Canyon. My wife, Shannah, and I worked with Hector in promoting his newly developed Viva El Paso.
We had previously been involved in outdoor drama near Amarillo, Texas. Later, it was Hector who got us to take an annual indoor Easter Pageant at Jesus Chapel to the Canyon for several years. Shannah was the director of that production and members of our family served as actors. In addition, we worked with Hector in his productions of Shakespeare on the Rocks. Finally, I worked with him for several years as an actor in his Lower Valley production of The First Thanksgiving.
Hector truly enriched our lives and the lives of countless other people. Hector has permanently exited the stage but his influence as a creative artistic director will be remembered far into the future.
VIVA HECTOR SERRANO!
