The Lumina Foundation has announced the appointment of Dr. William Serrata, El Paso Community College (EPCC) President, to its Board of Directors.
Since joining EPCC as president in 2012, Dr. Serrata has increased student success and student retention. He also has boosted dual-credit enrollment and graduation rates at El Paso.
Much of this success was realized through a focus on Hispanic and Latino students and students who are the first in their families to attend college.
“William is a national leader and brings an experienced focus on first-generation and Hispanic students,” said Jamie Merisotis, president and CEO of Lumina Foundation.
“His wealth of knowledge can contribute to our goal of increasing opportunities for quality learning after high school.”
Under Dr. Serrata’s leadership EPCC was among 10 finalists for the 2015 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the 2016 American Association of Community Colleges’ (AACC) Student Success Award winner and is consistently the recognized as the national leader in granting associate degrees to Hispanic students by Hispanic Outlook on Education magazine.
The Lumina Foundation is working at local, state, and national levels to design an affordable, new learning landscape that’s easier to navigate, especially for people who are Black, Hispanic, and Native American and often encounter barriers to success in existing education systems.
